The invention belongs to the technical field of bridge engineering and relates to a gravity type U-shaped abutment formwork supporting system and a mounting method thereof. A formwork system is connected into a whole through embedded steel bars and connecting supporting rods, so that the stress of the whole formwork system is stable, the use of opposite-pull screws is reduced, and a large amount of building workload of an external supporting system is saved. A modularized formwork supporting platform is integrated on a formwork, so that a safe, reliable and stable construction operation platform is formed after the formwork is installed, potential safety hazards of construction are greatly eliminated, the construction efficiency is improved, and the construction quality is guaranteed; and a reinforcing mesh is arranged on the inner side of the formwork, so that the local cracking phenomenon of an abutment body is effectively prevented.
