The invention discloses a light gypsum board and a production method thereof, belongs to the technical field of gypsum board production, and aims to solve the problem of waste utilization of ardealite and carbide slag. The lightweight gypsum board is prepared from the following materials: 60-70 parts by weight of phosphogypsum; 5-10 parts by weight of wood fiber; 5-10 parts by weight of carbide slag; 5-8 parts by weight of attapulgite powder; 10-12 parts by weight of an adhesive; 1-3 parts by weight of a waterproof agent; 1-2 parts by weight of a water reducing agent; 0.5-1 part by weight of a foaming agent; and 40-45 parts by weight of water. The method comprises the following steps: removing fluorine and phosphorus from phosphogypsum; removing impurities and desulfurizing carbide slag; preparing wood fibers; performing pulping; preparing foaming liquid; preparing gypsum slurry; and molding by casting. Through pretreatment, impurities influencing the quality of the gypsum board in the phosphogypsum and the carbide slag are removed, a gypsum board formula is introduced, solid waste digestion is completed, and the product quality is not influenced.
