The invention relates to magnesium aluminate spinel transparent ceramic and a preparation method thereof. The preparation method of the magnesium aluminate spinel transparent ceramic comprises the following steps: mixing phase-forming magnesium aluminate spinel powder and a sintering aid to obtain ceramic slurry, and drying, sieving and calcining the ceramic slurry to obtain raw material powder; performing compression molding on the raw material powder to obtain a ceramic biscuit; sequentially carrying out calcination and pressureless presintering on the ceramic biscuit to obtain a presintered body; and carrying out hot isostatic pressing sintering on the pre-sintered body to obtain the magnesium aluminate spinel transparent ceramic, the sintering aid is at least one of fluorides or oxyfluorides containing Y, La and Lu, preferably at least one of YF3 or YOF.
