A chain for a chain lock comprises a series arrangement of consecutive links coupled to each other via respective articulated link connections and pivotable relative to each other about a pivot axis of the respective articulated link connections, the pivot axis being parallel to a normal direction. The arrangement is foldable into a compact storage configuration in which, at each of the articulated link connections, two links coupled to each other via the respective articulated link connection are in a minimum pivot position relative to each other, in which the two links are connected to each other via the respective articulated link connection, and in which the two links are connected to each other via the respective articulated link connection. The two links enclose a minimum possible angle in the range of their relative pivotability. According to the invention, at least some of the articulated link connections are provided with presetting means, in particular pivot angle limiting means and/or preloading means, the pivoting direction of two links coupled to each other via the respective articulated link connections is preset, and when the arrangement is folded together, the pivoting angle limiting means and/or the preloading means are preloaded. The two links pivot relative to each other in a pivot direction.
