The invention relates to a zinc oxide varistor medium with high potential gradient and high nonlinear coefficient, which is characterized by comprising the following components in parts by mole: 100 parts of ZnO, 0.01 to 1.8 parts of Sb2O3, 0.01 to 1.8 parts of Co2O3, 0.01 to 1.8 parts of Bi2O3, 0.01 to 1.8 parts of Ni2O3, 0.01 to 1.8 parts of Cr2O3, 0.01 to 1.8 parts of Ag2CaV4O12, 0.01 to 1.0 part of Al2O3, 0.01 to 1.0 part of zinc borate, 0.01 to 1.0 part of LiNO3 and 0.01 to 1.0 part of ZnTeO4. The invention also provides a preparation method of the zinc oxide varistor medium with high potential gradient and high nonlinear coefficient. The zinc oxide varistor medium provided by the invention has high potential gradient, high nonlinear coefficient and strong pulse impact resistance, and can be applied to lightning protection and overvoltage protection of a power lightning arrester or other power electronic circuits.
