A pedestrian warning system for a vehicle driveway comprises a warning element 10, 14 positioned at the entrance or exit 2 of the driveway 1. The warning element is reconfigurable between an inoperative configuration where it does not extend into the pedestrian walkway and an operative configuration where it does extend into the walkway. A control system comprises an actuator for generating a signal indicating that a vehicle 8 is expected through the entrance or exit and a control unit to receive a signal from the actuator and control the warning element to change the configuration from inoperative to operative. The warning element may be elongate and may rotate between a vertical, inoperative configuration to an operative configuration at an angle to the vertical. The warning element may include a mounting bracket 26 and may be deformable. The actuator may be in wireless communication with the control unit and may include a sensor for detecting a vehicle.
