Subsurface Investigation, Section D014, New Carrollton Route
The results of 62 borings in Section D014 of New Carrollton Route of the Washington Metropolitan Area Metro system are summarized. The exploration work generally extends along the line of the Penn Central Railroad adjacent to the flood plain of Beaver Dam Creek for a distance of about 1-1/3 miles terminating near the intersection of the railroad with I-495 Beltway. The investigation was made to determine subsurface conditions for planned rapid transit construction which includes running trackage on embankments, various crossing structures and one station planned for this section of the line. The report contains a continuous geological section along the centerline of the rapid transit trackage, separate geological sections for various crossing structures, logs of the borings, results of laboratory tests on undisturbed samples, a summary of subsoil properties and conclusions on the anticipated design and construction problem.
