A summary of typical problems encountered when placing and compacting asphalt concrete pavements by the method specifications currently in use in California is presented. Preliminary evaluations of alternative methods for determining the in situ density and relative compaction of asphalt concrete pavements are also discussed. These include laboratory specific gravity tests on core samples, reducing the effective measurement depth of conventional nuclear backscatter gages, and a new prototype nuclear backscatter gage designed to measure the density in the top 0.08' of the pavement.
