Characteristics of horizontal construction joints at the Toktogul'sk hydroelectric plant
Conclusions 1. The comprehensive investigations revealed that improvement of the construction joints in the adopted concreting method leads to joints of a higher quality than that resulting from other concreting methods. Despite the significant increase in the number of horizontal joints under the adopted method, it permits obtaining in a reliable manner the specified strength and impemeability characteristics for the structure. 2. In the design of massive concrete structures to be built by the method used at the Toktogul'sk plant, the following design characteristics of the horizontal joints can be used: cohesion equal to not less than 50% of the strength of the monolithic concrete; coefficient of friction (taking into account the meshing action) in the joint, 1.50–1.60; water-absorption, not over the normative value (0.01 liters/min. lin. m) for monolithic concrete. 3. As part of further work in refining the concreting techniques for horizontal construction joints, it is evidently necessary to study under construction conditions also additional possibilities for improving them, in particular by using synthetic gluing materials to increase the strength of the joints, etc.
