Charge Imbalance Relaxation as a Probe of Anisotropic Heavy Fermion Superconductors
Abstract A quasiparticle charge imbalance [1,2] measures the net charge associated with the electron and hole-like quasiparticle branches in a superconductor.A non-zero charge imbalance is created in a superconductor by injecting a current across the insulating barrier of a superconductor insulator normal metal (SIN) junction. The charge imbalance decays by converting into condensate charge with a relaxation time τR(T) [3,4,5] which is determined by the various pairbreaking processes in the superconductor and by the tunnelling of excitations back across the junction into the normal metal [6]. The latter is described by an inelastic scattering rate 1/τ TUN and results in a rise in the junction resistance R(T) as the temperature is increased up to Tc. The excess junction resistance can be studied to yield a variety of information about the superconductor [7,8,9]
