Formation Thermodynamics of Inclusions in Al Deoxidized Low Alloy Steel
In this chapter, formation thermodynamics of low-melting-point inclusions in Al-deoxidized steel was conducted. As MgO is widely used for slag making and ladle lining, spinel inclusions can be formed very easily in secondary refining, causing various problems in casting and also in final products. Hence, research works were carried out with the attempt to relieve bad effects of high-melting-point inclusions. Usually, solid inclusions in Al deoxidized steel can be modified into low-melting-temperature ones by Ca-treatment. Whereas, large D-type inclusions are not easy to prevent during Ca-treatment. As [Ca] can also be supplied into liquid steel bulk by chemical reactions between steel and basic slag, hence, present authors wanted to find out how to target low-melting-point inclusions in Al deoxidized special steel by slag refining. Before the conduction of a series of laboratorial experiments, it would be desirable to carry out thermodynamic calculations for deeper insights on this topic. Hence, the work in this chapter was done. It was found that targeting low-melting-point inclusions in Al deoxidized steel by slag-steel reaction is feasible, in which the high basicity high alumina refining slag should be used.
