Anomalies in ultrasonic flaw detection in used railroad rail
Ultrasonics have been sucessfully used for a number of years to detect cracks in railroad rail. Even with this success, there have been cases where defects have been missed, and where irregularities in the pulse propagation pattern have been noted. Studies of the ultrasonic pulse propagation characteristics of used railroad rail have shown a significant reduction in the shear wave velocity in the severely cold-worked, 3 to 5 mm thick, top layer of the rail head. An analogy between this condition and the similar situation that can exist in the earth's surface suggests that wave refraction in this cold-worked layer could account for some of the difficulties encountered in rail flaw detection. This summary reports the experimental results connected with this study. (Peters)
