Rail flaw inspection technology
During the past few decades, railroads, both in the U.S. and worldwide, have adopted non-destructive rail inspection techniques in order to minimize the occurrence of train derailments due to rail failures. Many different transducer configurations and inspection practices have been used. In order to determine the effectiveness of these inspection practices and to obtain data for use in planning the development of improved systems, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), through the Transportation Systems Center (TSC), initiated a study to evaluate existing rail inspection system capabilities. A study was also made to estimate the total costs for inspecting and replacing rail and to determine the most cost-effective inspection system. (Peters)
