Passenger safety level at fires during the railway transportation
Fire hazard in passenger trains increased lately because of new services introduced (catering, high-frequency communication) and hydrocarbon fuels used for heating purposes (compressed gas, gas oil). In Russia, 43 fires a year in 1981-1988, 50 fires a year in 1986-1990 and 28 fires in 1992-1998 took place in the passenger train cars. In the period 1986-1998, 507 passenger train cars were damaged and 34 persons (mostly passengers) were killed in the fires. The passenger traffic in Russia varied in the range from 152.9 bilion.km to 272.2 bilion.km (downward trend) in 1992-1998. The statistical data were used for estimating the passenger safety level (0.999992 in 1992-1998). The level was lower than the by standard allowable one (0.999999) but higher than the respective level in 1991-1992 (0.999942). The death probability in fires was 0.00000787 and 0.000058, respectively.
