Fire Department Extinguishment
First Water (MA)
This chapter focuses on the building's performance for manual suppression, describing ways to calculate the time to apply water to a fire. The fire safety engineer analyzes a building for its expected performance – before the fire. In order to compare fire propagation and water application, the engineer must calculate time durations to complete selected fire department operations. In this chapter, two types of calculation are used. The first treats water supply functions as mini‐construction projects. Supply water procedures are ideally suited to critical path methods (CPMs). These well‐established techniques have been used in project management for over half a century. These methods are adapted to calculate time durations for supplying water to an attack pumper and the attack launch point (ALP). Knowing the time it takes to apply water, combined with the diagnostic fire scenario provides a means of understanding the building's role in fire extinguishment.
