Steady‐State Isothermal Newtonian Line Contacts
In the current chapter, the FEM modeling of EHL steady‐state isothermal Newtonian line contacts is covered in detail. Line contacts take place between contacting solid elements that are infinitely long in one of the principal space directions. They can be found for example in spur gears, cylindrical roller‐element bearings, cam‐followers, etc. As a natural least complex starting point, this chapter considers the steady‐state isothermal Newtonian configuration, which would allow an identification of FEM modeling difficulties, before moving towards more complex configurations in subsequent chapters. The governing equations are obtained as a particular case of the more general point contact case, under transient thermal non‐Newtonian regime, as detailed in chapter 1. Some preliminary results obtained using the model detailed in this chapter are presented.
