Contracts are fond of stating that something should be done in a reasonable time. What is a reasonable time will depend upon the circumstances of each particular case. A contract may say that a contractor must rectify defects within a reasonable time. If a contract does not fix a time for doing something, it will usually, but not always, be implied that it should be done within a reasonable time. Because people all have their own ideas about what is a reasonable time or a reasonable anything else and because each idea will probably be different and because only a judge, arbitrator or adjudicator can say with any authority what a reasonable time is in any particular situation, they must be flexible when confronted with this phrase and, in practice, use a broad‐brush approach.
