Cities and civilisation are at a turning point in history. Peak Oil is coinciding with unprecedented population growth and demographic transition. The greening of city‐regions, cities, neigbbourhoods and buildings will be an essential part of our transition to resilient cities that can adapt to climate change. Greening will involve new collaborations between professionals and citizens – a trans‐disciplinary approach – which will celebrate the ecosystem services provided by nature. Efficiency and low‐carbon approaches, whilst important will not be enough on their own. Greening must involve the integration of biodiverse soil and vegetation in order to reverse degradation, clean air and water, reduce floods and improve microclimates.
