The Reinforced Concrete Wharf of the United Fruit Company at Bocas Del Toro, Panama
Among the several tropical divisions of the United Fruit Company, whose home office is in Boston, Mass., that in the Republic of Panama is of rapidly growing importance. It is called the “Bocas Division,” from Bocas del Toro, the Provincial Capital, where the division headquarters are located, and is about 140 miles northwest from Colon. It may be noted in passing that the name is illogical, for its translation is “Mouths of the Bull.” There are indeed several mouths from Almirante Bay and Chiriqui Lagoon, the bodies of land-locked water which form the magnificent harbors pertinent to this Capital, whence naturally the plural, “Bocas,” is suggested, but the ascription of them all to the bull is an unwarranted monopoly on his part.
