A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The acute angles in the raked roof and the ‘folded’ glazed facade of the new Grand Canal Theatre, in Dublin, Ireland, accentuate the building’s identity. Cantilevering balconies in the auditorium, high-stress locations in slender walls that had to be reinforced, and the need to coordinate the tolerances of the steelwork with those of the concrete elements all posed structural challenges in the design of this modern arts facility, which was constructed on a remediated industrial riverbank site.
