Managing Utilities in 3D Design and Construction Workflow
A critical factor that contributes to inefficiencies in the design and construction of civil infrastructure projects is the lack of accurate, complete information about utility facilities that might be in conflict with the project. 3D design software is dramatically changing the way agencies design and build civil infrastructure projects. Most 3D design and construction processes focus on earthwork and grading automated machine guidance (AMG) applications. However, current AMG processes and protocols, including data exchange, provide very limited support for underground facilities. The U.S. Department of Transportation recently completed a research project that examined issues that agencies face in managing utilities in 3D design and construction workflows. This paper summarizes the research findings. The research included a documentation of business practices and lessons learned from a review of selected case studies; an analysis of implementation strategies and return on investment (ROI); and a review of the use of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to mark and manage underground utility installations, along with a discussion of benefits and costs.
