A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Gyvenu Naujamiestyje: būstas, lokacija ir pozicijos socialinėje erdvėje / ; Living in naujamiestis: housing, location and positions in social space.
Gentrification describes the socio-spatial processes taking place in the central areas of the city. Naujamiestis is one of the fastest developing central districts of Vilnius. The district's industrial past is being replaced by new housing projects, business centers and cultural spaces being built on abandoned industrial sites. Naujamiestis is becoming attractive to newcomers. The question arises as to how these processes affect the urban space. In order to understand this, the theoretical perspective of Pierre Bourdieu was chosen. The aim of this study is to reveal the role of social structures in the positioning of the individual in urban space. The study focuses on the case of Naujamiestis. Participants were selected by purposive sampling, using personal contacts and the social network ,,Facebook”. The study consisted of 10 qualitative semi-structured interviews. The chosen research strategy is etnographic research. The results of the study reveal that housing choice is intuitive, with individuals positioning themselves in the urban space, influenced by habitus. Social, cultural and economic capitals become the tools for a successful settlement in the urban space.
