Renovation construction in Russia : case study of log building tradition
In time of growing ecological awareness construction industry can contribute by giving second life to old buildings. Northern regions spawned a rich number of log houses, many of which potential is hidden under ruins. The commissioner was LAB University of Applied Sciences, which promoted sustainable renovation of rural areas in terms of Korjausklinikka project. The thesis provided techniques of renovation in Russia, relevant in other Northern regions as well. The thesis represented complex system of methods that could be applied to log houses needing revival. In Russia development of these methods became possible by degrees due to renovation of wooden architecture monuments in Kizhi. The thesis resorted to case study analysis as a representative methodology. Church of Transfiguration in Kizhi Pogost was the case study object. Literature on restoration review allowed to collect specialists’ opinions and experience throughout the history. Current situation in Russia was investigated. As rates of renovation construction progress slowly than it is possible, the thesis argued reasons why the practice of renovation should be expanded. To sum up, log houses renovation is ecologically profitable, involves cultural awareness, brings up new living space and business opportunities. Every person is capable to contribute to the process if having distinctive manual and motivation.
