Subsurface temperatures and heat flow in AMSOC core hole near Mayaguez, Puerto Rico
Temperatures were measured at 7.6 m intervals in 305 m vertical hole near Mayaguez, Puerto Rico; analysis of temperatures obtained 1, 2, 12, 75, 185, and 228 days after completion of drilling permits calculation of predrilling temperature to within few hundredths of degree Celsius; temperature gradient increases rather smoothly from about 4 C/km near top of hole to nearly 10 C/km at bottom; this change in gradient with depth is tentatively ascribed to slight warming of climate; harmonic means of 18 thermal-conductivity measurements on resaturated serpentinite.
