Grouting problems in driving leadville tunnel
At several points, large underground reservoirs of water were tapped; it was frequently necessary to consolidate unstable rocks ahead of face by grouting, before advancing tunnel; ordinary grouting procedures found inapplicable; development of technique involving sealing tunnel face and lining walls with concrete; also use of oats as expanding medium, mixed with grout and introduced at low pressures into short holes in tunnel lining.
