Construction of underground suburban station at Paris-Austerlitz
Structures to be built were laid out at surface level so as to reduce excavation in chalk layer, avoid pressure from underground water and connect up new buildings with existing ones; method enabled part of project to be completed in open; walls were cast in bentonite; underground water layer was lowered from average height of 27.50 to 20.50 m by ring of filtering wells or by several high-capacity wells; covering slab was cast in situ; special materials were used to reduce noise in parts open to public.
