Four continuous beams of center span of steel bridge with umbrella-type suspension system were loaded by suspending heavy barge at high tide using fixture which would break at prescribed stress; during low tide, barge gradually emerged from water causing load on beam to increase from zero to maximum predetermined value; experimental results obtained are compared with those of theoretical stress-strain analysis.
