New York electric subway construction methods
Aug 29 1930 n 3372 p 257-259: Subway excavation is made in earth and rock, much of it above groundwater level; in general, it has been necessary to by-pass or rebuild considerable lengths of old brick and concrete sewers, often of large capacity, and to elevate or by-pass all gas mains; excavation in trenches is largely effected with grabs and dragline buckets operated by locomotive cranes or by compressed-air shovels; contract specifications. Oct 24 1930 n 3380 p 509-511: Preliminary operations; four-track subway built in partly open and partly covered trench; preliminary work included temporary overhead support of several large gas mains with vertical clearances of 25 to 35 ft. above street; concrete required for this section was mixed at central plant on river bank more than mile from job, having two 1-yd. mixers. Dec 26 1930 n 3389 p 791-794: Wide trench with transverse deck girders supported on timber towers at 60-ft. centers; deck shores initially set at subgrade; use of belt conveyors; excavation under decks supported on predriven steel piles.
