Slurry drilling method sinks deep trench
Method and equipment to place 2 1/2-ft thick, 1400-ft-long, up to 175-ft deep concrete cutoff wall that is needed to seal off potentially dangerous groundwater from massive earthfill section of Pennsylvania's Allegheny Dam; deep, narrow trench is sunk through bentonite slurry; tremie concrete then displaces slurry, forming 16 1/2 to 19-ft-long panels that join end-to-end to make water-tight cutoff wall.
