Improving quality of blooming ingots
New type of ingot with rippled surfaces is described; transverse and longitudinal cracking is greatly reduced in case of certain high-grade and alloy steels; heat is conserved in hot top by pouring on first exothermic mixture, then lunkerite; hot cracking is much reduced and consumption of ingot molds, runners, etc, is lower; ingot top discard is reduced. (See also Stal n 12 Dec 1963 p 1086-7)
