Structural nonuniformity of killed steel ingots
In 6-7 ton ingots of low-carbon, rail, chromium, and alloy steels, special zones of structural heterogeneity, in form of inverted dendritic domes, were revealed in lower portion of ingot by means of radioactive isotopes and sulfur prints; addition of inert heat retaining mixtures (refractory clay powder) to hot tops removed this defect and generally improved macrostructure and condition of metal. (See also Stal n 8 Aug 1963 p 742-6)
