Structural nonuniformity of killed steel ingots
In 6-7 ton ingots of low-carbon, rail, chromium, and alloy steels, special zones of structural heterogeneity, in form of inverted dendritic domes, were revealed in lower portion of ingot by means of radioactive isotopes and sulfur prints; addition of inert heat retaining mixtures (refractory clay powder) to hot tops removed this defect and generally improved macrostructure and condition of metal. (see also English translation in Stal in English n 8 Aug 1963 p 646-9)
