Foundation problems related to ground surface subsidence in Mexico City
Ground settlement assumes different values throughout Mexico City depending upon rate of reduction of piezometric water pressures in subsoil and different thicknesses and compressibility of clay deposit; where water table has been lowered in highly compressible volcanic clay, shrinkage takes place to high degree and large fissures and cracks develop in ground surface and in clay deposits; where pile foundations support buildings, clay around piles may shrink away, causing buckling; subsoil conditions are noted, and attention is then given to design, and attendant problems, of point bearing pile and friction pile foundations.
