Bracing and forming -- Key to fast subway construction
Construction of 4600 ft of underground subway tunnel for Bay Area Rapid Transit system included 3300 ft of double-box structure; equipment was designed to improve excavation bracing system and concrete forming operations; excavation shoring made of soldier beams and lagging, was braced with 75-ton screw jack struts and without walers; struts were made from 14-in. steel pipe; screw jacks applied up to 40-ton load on shoring; movable jumbo with 12 screeds was designed for forming variable sectioned tunnel invert; two 25-ton jumbo forms, made from steel sections and plate, were used to form tunnel walls and ceiling; lagging formed outside of walls.
