Jacking barges install foundations for 4-mile crossing
Structure of 21,800-ft-long Astoria Bridge across Columbia River, connecting Oregon and Washington, comprises 2 high-level, steel truss bridges over ship channels; more than 11,000 ft of prestressed concrere roadway supported by hollow, cylindrical concrete piles crosses stretch of sandy shallows; placing of pier shells and beams and driving of more than 3700 steel and concrete piles up to 180 ft long from 3 special jacking barges which float only when moving between work locations, are described.
