Failure of prestressed concrete reservoir
Failure of circular prestressed concrete reservoir backfilled over one-half of its circumference is described and analyzed; reservoir was 131 ft in ID and 30 ft 6 in. high; prestressing was applied by preload method, using 0.142 in. diam wire with spacing varying from 78 wires/ft at bottom of tank to 6 wires/ft at top; wall thickness was 10 in., excluding gunite covering of tendons; reservoir was built in full-depth excavation on top of hill, was filled in order to test it for leaks, then drained; collapse took place while waterproofing was still being applied to parts of reservoir, and other parts were backfilled.
