Boring and pile driving into permafrost
Methods of experimental driving of piles and boring of holes employed in Vorkuta, Soviet Siberia; soils of site were represented by silty loams of upper and lower moraines containing gravel and pebbles measuring 2 to 4 cm, in quantity from 20 to 40%; there were no large ice inclusions, total water content was 20 to 25%; soil temperature at depth of 4 to 8 m was -0.7 to -1 C; study showed that to drive piles directly into permafrost it is most effective to use percussive method, in particular, diesel hammer.
