World's largest mole tunnels at Oahe dam
Boring of seven 29 1/2 ft diam power tunnels in Pierre shale at Oahe dam, South Dakota by continuous tunnel boring machine, called Robbins mechanical mole; mole weights 200 tons, is 55 ft long and has eight cutting arms on clocklike face of cutter; on outer rim are additional cutters and buckets to remove cuttings; maximum rate of tunneling is 12 ft per hr; single operator is located in protected compartment.
