Dam project harnesses Savannah River
Purpose of project is to reduce flood damages, generate hydroelectric power and regulate river flow in interest of navigation; dam consists of 1900 ft long 204 ft high gravity section flanked by 13,000 ft of total length embankment sections; 12 spillway gates, 40 by 35 ft; 24 ft diam penstocks; 900,000 cu yd concrete and 4,000,000 cu yd of earthfill required; 4 generators of 66,000 kw each; vacuum cooling of aggregates; crushing of aggregates; equipment used.
