Influence of foundation elasticity on hydrostatic load distribution in arch gravity dams
Necessity of considering elastic deformability of foundations in design of arch dams is emphasized and practical difficulties of choosing correct value for modulus of elasticity of rocky foundations are pointed out; typical arch gravity dam is analyzed by arch crown cantilever method to illustrate influence of foundation elasticity on hydrostatic load distribution between arches and cantilevers; it is concluded that arch action in arch dam is increased by deformability of foundations.
