Elastic analysis of rock movements caused by mining
Problem of mechanics of ground movements around mine excavations, with particular reference to longwall system; displacements calculated by elastic methods are qualitatively similar to field displacements, and several phenomena, previously regarded as anomalous, are shown to be normal elastic movements; direction and magnitudes of principal stresses and maximum shear stresses about excavation, indicate manner in which failure of rock may occur. (See also - discussion p 433-5)
