Instant dome is concrete bubble
Italian system for making 50 ft diam concrete dome in less than 2 hr was demonstrated at Columbia University, New York City; dome, approximately 1 in. thick, is called Binishell, after its developer, D.Bini: shells, in tests to destruction, successfully carried loadings of 650 psf; by this method, membrane is laid out on flat floor slab and spread with wet concrete; membrane is then inflated, lifting concrete and forming shell; after three days door and window openings are made in shell and inner membrane is retrieved; technique can be used to create any smooth shape building with circular, square, rectangular, polygonal or other shaped base, and shells can be combined with precast elements for architectural treatment; materials and method of dome inflation is outlined.
