First orthotropic bridge deck paved with epoxy asphalt
More than mile of 80 ft wide orthotropic deck on bridge across southerly end of San Francisco Bay is paved with new epoxy asphalt formulation; sprayed epoxy asphalt bond coat was applied to steel; 1 in. leveling course of epoxy asphalt was then placed with conventional asphalt paving equipment; sprayed bond coat was followed by additional 1 in. of epoxy asphalt, rolled to firm surface; material used was Concresive Epoxy Asphalt -- two-component binder system with Epon resins (Shell Chemical Co), asphalt and modifiers with epoxy hardeners; it is placed at about 260 F.
