Effects of fatigue stressing on susceptibility of steel to brittle fracture
Previous investigations to determine whether cyclic stressing increases susceptibility of steel to brittle fracture are reviewed and some new results are presented to resolve anomaly in earlier work; it is concluded that main danger arises from non-propagating fatigue cracks and this is illustrated by some results showing effect of small fatigue cracks on static strength of steel at low temperature.
