Kariba hydro-Electric scheme
Project comprises double curvature 420 ft high, 2000 ft long arch dam of mass concrete, and two power stations; first stage has installed capacity of 600,000 kW, and second stage, to start early in 1962, will have installed capacity of 900,000 kW; underground power plant contains six 100 Mw turbogenerators driven by 140,000 hp Francis turbines. (see also Engineering v 189 n 4908 May 13 1960 p 651-6)
