Pilot tests on ultimate static strength of unsymmetrical plate girders
Eight ultimate load tests were performed on three 36-in. deep unsymmetrical plate girders; one girder was 25 ft long, two were 30 ft long; all girders contained same cross section; loading conditions employed were pure bending, dominant shear, and combined shear and bending; girder strengths under dominant shear were 18% higher than theoretical values; ultimate loads from bending tests were also higher than predicted; tests under combined high bending and high shear gave lower strengths than indicated by current ultimate strength interaction envelope.
