Spliced concrete piles fill offshore construction gap
Combination of shallow offshore water and long concrete piles presented construction problem in erecting platform; piles were fabricated in 2 pieces short enough to be handled by small, shallow-draft derrick barge; after driving first section, second is welded atop first and then spliced pile is driven; steel tip was used to drive through to sandy foundation; welding operation.
