Geotechnical problems encountered in construction of subway tunnel from Jernbanetorvet to Toyen
Construction of subway through central part of Oslo where tunnel crossed through heavy deposits of soft clay, provided number of geotechnical problems, most difficult of which was that of ensuring stability of deep excavations; several different methods have been used to stabilize excavations; main method consisted of excavating in compressed air beneath loaded tunnel roof and between sheet pile walls; this method, which had not been used before, seemed to be adequate construction procedure.
