Inhibition of the chain reaction of oxidation of cyclohexanol by molecular iodine, potassium iodide and bromide
Abstract 1. The chain-initiated oxidation of cyclohexanol is ihibited by I2, KI and KBr. 2. The reaction inhibited by iodine and potassium iodide is characterized by critical effects dependent on the consumption of iodine—an inhibiting agent, according to the reaction with cyclohexanone—the reaction product. 3. A mechanism is proposed for the inhibiting effect of I2 and I- in the oxidation of secondary alcohol, which shows a qualitative agreement with experimental results. 4. The inhibition of oxidation of cyclohexanol with Br- is due to the fact that oxidized forms of bromine are produced during the reaction, which have an inhibiting effect.
