The elastic buckling of interbraced girders
AbstractThis paper reports on a study of the buckling of a row of parallel girders joined at their midspans by secondary beams. The girders are of monosymmetrical section and are subjected to uniform bending. The beams provide both lateral and torsional restraints to the girders although there is no exterior support for the beams.Closed form solutions are obtained. The threshold stiffnesses of the bracing beams which can reduce the effective length of the girders by half are provided. The relationships between the buckling moments and the restraining stiffnesses of the beams are presented. It is found that, although the axial stiffnesses of the secondary beams are unable to prevent the girders from buckling when there is no torsional restraint, their presence can increase the buckling moments of the girders if torsional restraints coexist. However, when the axial stiffnesses increase to a certain limit, their further increase can lead to little further increases of the buckling moments because of the changing of the buckling mode.
